3. The Thirty-Day Experiment
All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
The power of the experiment lies in the simplicity of the model and the independence of the user. The goal of the method is to increase insight in how you function and how you can influence this with the aid of information, personalized data, and connection with professionals and likeminded people.
The Method Consists of Five Simple Steps:
Step 1 – Research: where are you, and where do you want to go?
Step 2 – Strategy: what will you change, and what will you measure?
Step 3 – Experiment: do it for thirty days!
Step 4 – Keep track: to measure is to know!
Step 5 – Evaluate: what did it bring you?
A quick example to illustrate: when you want to work on your physical fitness, you don’t just go to the gym and lift heavy stuff indefinitely until you become strong. You first estimate the state of your physical condition and what specific goal you want to achieve (step 1). Then you decide which training method fits your goal (step 2). When the planning is done, you’ll apply this training for a set period (step 3). Based on the data — speed, time, distance, weight, repetitions — you track your progress (step 4). Based on this data you’ll decide whether you have reached your goal and if you want to adjust something in your training (step 5). For some reason, when it comes to physical fitness, most people find these steps to be completely obvious and self-evident, yet when it comes to mental fitness they only take shots in the dark.
